The word cameo originates from the ancient Arabic word “Khamea”meaning amulet.
In folklore, cameos relate to attracting health and good fortune. They were hand carved from hard stone and glass and were always in positive relief with a dark background.
Some of the earliest cameos of African people date back to the 1600’s.
Hamaka cameos are inspired by images of friends and family who are a constant support in my art practice.
The movement of the continuous lines create an anatomical illusion of skin deep beauty and a sense of positive relief akin to the original carved cameos.
